This gilded oak frame has such a compelling provenance. Made by the Autotype Company between 1883 and 1905, to house a fine art print of the famous work “A Child's Portrait in Different Views: 'Angel's Heads’", by Sir Joshua Reynolds, it has a stained oak frieze and gilt reeded sight edge.
In 1906, it fell into the hands of our esteemed expatriate painter Frances Hodgkins, who replaced the print with a work of her own, and made appropriate corrections to the name plate on the reverse. What a wonderful history!
